They’re The Patrol That’s Out Of Control.

The laughs are plentiful and the snow action faster than the men’s downhill, as the craziest group of skiers ever take to the slopes in Ski Patrol. Pops (Ray Walston) is the owner of the Snowy Peaks Lodge, a popular ski resort. His lease is up for renewal, but he’s not worried — his safety record is unblemished, in spite of the crew of misfits who make up his Ski Patrol, led by Jerry (Roger Rose) and Iceman (T.K. Carter). But unscrupulous land developer Maris (Martin Mull) has other devious plans — he wants to take over the lease from Pops and hires a blond ski hunk named Lance (Corby Timbrook) to sabotage the Ski Patrol’s efforts. It’s snow wonder as the Ski Patrol traverses and slaloms through the powder with breathtaking comic flair, as they try to save Pop’s mountain. Incredible aerial tricks, snowboarding and a spectacular skiing showdown all add to the excitement. Ski Patrol is a fun time for all seasons.

Downhill Racer on VHS. Starring Robert Redford, Gene Hackman, Camilla Sparv. Directed by Michael Ritchie. 1969.

From the box:

Director Michael Ritchie’s (The Golden Child) debut film is a tense and taut look at the world of Olympic skiing. Robert Redford is the hero, a handsome loner from Idaho Springs, Colorado, bent on making to the top of the heap. As the pressure and tension build, Redford handles himself well, learning in the process how fleeting and lonely fame can be. Redford is well cast as the all-American boy chasing his dream, and Gene Hackman is excellent as the tough and demanding American ski coach.

She’s beautiful, smart, goal-oriented, and she just inherited the Cleveland Indians. Unfortunately, she wants to move the franchise to Miami, and a losing season is her only ticket to Florida. So she signs the wildest gang of screwballs that ever spit tobacco.

They’re handsome, but they’re hopeless! Her catcher (Tom Berenger) is a washed-up womanizer who struck out in life. Her ace pitcher (Charlie Sheen) is a punked-out crazy who struck out with the law. And her third baseman (L.A. Law’s Corbin Bernsen) is more concerned fielding endorsements than grounders.

Lord of the Flies

Lord of the Flies on VHS. Starring James Aubrey, Tom Chapin, Hugh Edwards, Roger Elwin. Directed by Peter Brook. Based on the novel by William Golding. 1963.

From the box:

“A near perfect adaptation… Visually hypnotic and powerful.” — Video Movie Guide

The original film adaptation of William Golding’s classic moral parable, Peter Brook’s Lord of the Flies has been praised as “one of those rare instances in which the movie is better than the book.” Stranded on a remote island, a group of British schoolboys try to organize themselves into a law-abiding society: “After all, we’re not savages — we’re English,” one of them proclaims. The decent, levelheaded Ralph is picked to lead them, but is soon rivaled by the brash and outspoken Jack, whose appeals to the boys’ primal urges of food and fear soon threaten Ralph’s rule. As Jack’s unruly bank of hunters quickly grows in number, the boys’ fragile society disintegrates, and they plunge headlong into anarchy and bloodshed. Brook’s decision to shoot his tropical film in black and white is inspired: The resulting stark images add depth and weight to the chilling study of the inherent defects of society and man. In today’s post-Cold War world, with its lack of simple “us versus them” conclusions, Lord of the Flies becomes an even more compelling film, exploring how easily the threads that hold our social fabric together can thin, fray, and ultimately unravel.
